Liberty Park is Salt Lake City’s oldest and second-largest city park. The 80-acre park is surpassed only by Sugar House Park with 110.5 acres. A great post ahead.
This large park boasts a variety of recreational facilities and activities for all ages. It features two playgrounds, volleyball courts, a pond with paddle boats, and an aviary.
Seven Canyons Fountain
Right in the middle of Liberty Park is a fun water fountain designed to look like the seven canyons that flow into Salt Lake City. The fountain was built in 1993 with a donation from Salt Lake City philanthropist Obert C. Tanner.
It was shut off two years ago due to health and safety concerns. But the city has a plan to get it flowing again by next summer.
Mayor Jackie Biskupski is asking the City Council for $850,000 to repair and reopen the fountain. She recommends using the capital improvements fund to pay for it, pending City Council approval late this summer.
According to a press release, the new fountain will be “modified and enhanced” to symbolize the region’s streams and landscapes. It will also include new landscaping, lighting enhancements, handrails, and grass turf replacement. The original designers — Boyd Blackner, Elizabeth Blackner, Stephen Goldsmith, and John Swain — will be involved in the process to help keep the artistic intent of the artwork alive.
Rotary Playground
Liberty Park is a large park in Salt Lake City UT that features a variety of attractions for both locals and tourists. It’s a great place to take a stroll, play tennis or just relax in the sun.
The Rotary Playground is an incredible addition to Liberty Park and offers a lot of fun for kids. Little ones will love the baby swings and musical instruments, while bigger kids can have their own space with huge slides.
The playground is also equipped with a wheelchair-accessible merry-go-round, kinetic art, and sensory experiences. Tracy Aviary
Liberty Park is one of the largest public parks in Salt Lake City. It is also home to the Tracy Aviary and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
This aviary is a great family-friendly outdoor activity that will keep your kids engaged all day long. The aviary houses over 400 different birds and includes interactive bird shows, keeper demonstrations, roaming animal encounters,, and over a dozen nature play opportunities!
The aviary also has several ponds where guests can watch pelicans and other duck species feed. The largest pond houses a flock of American White Pelicans and Double-crested Cormorants.
The aviary is home to over 40 bird species from all over the world, as well as a few native Utah species. In addition to the birds, visitors can explore 8 acres of themed exhibits and botanical gardens.
Native American Village
If you want to learn about Utah’s indigenous people, Liberty Park is the place to go. The Native American Village features a traditional teepee and a splash pad, as well as a mercantile store and ice cream parlor.
Another popular spot at Liberty Park is the Tracy Aviary. The aviary houses more than 135 bird species from around the world. There are daily events such as a lorikeet adventure, an indoor bird show, and keeper talks.
Besides the aviary, Liberty Park also features a museum and playground. It’s a great spot for a day of jogging, playing tennis, or picnicking with friends and family.
Gilgal Sculpture Garden is another hidden local treasure that many people don’t know about. This inner city garden is home to 12 original sculptures, as well as over 70 stones engraved with scriptures and literary texts.
The sphinx with the face of Joseph Smith, founder of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, is one of the most famous pieces at Gilgal Sculpture Garden.
